It is customary at school dances to exchange and wear corsages and boutonnieres. Traditionally, the male brings a corsage for his date to wear and the female brings a boutonniere for him. There is no rule saying girls can’t pick out their own corsages, however, and today it is perfectly acceptable for friends attending an event in a group to get corsages or boutonnieres for each other.

If you’re picking out a corsage for your date (or yourself), it’s recommended to choose a color that matches your prom gown. The corsage is pinned to the sleeves or straps of the gown, so if you’ll be wearing a strapless dress a wrist corsage (aka “wristlet”) is a better choice. For guys who don’t know what color dress their dates will be wearing, a white corsage will avoid any color clashes. In case you’re wondering, the corsage and boutonniere do not have to match (color-wise or flower-wise), although matching the corsage and boutonniere looks great.

Say “Bravo!” with a Bouquet

There are always several school plays, talent shows and musical performances every year. A bouquet of flowers is the perfect way to say “bravo!” after a choir, band or orchestra performance. We recommend having corsages and boutonnieres delivered a day or two prior to the big event. This allows time for the flowers to open up and look their best. They should be kept in a cool place with their stems in water.
